Medicare was submitted to the Congress. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of free counsel for indigent suspects facing serious criminal charges. Canada accepted American nuclear warheads for missiles stored on Canadian soil. President and Mrs. Kennedy made a ten-day tour of Europe during which he gave his Ich bin ein Berliner speech. The Mona Lisa was exhibited in New York City and Washington, D.C. A bill requiring equal pay for equal work, regardless of sex, was signed into law by President Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. He was the fourth American president to suffer this fate.

Mary Lou was working at Appalachian Hospital in an administrative position and Tom was an x-ray technician at the same hospital at the time of the marriage.
